Hurricane prep for Tampa Bay seawalls, docks and lifts

Before hurricane season, photograph every seawall panel and dock connection with dated images, seal cap cracks over 1/16 inch, verify boat lift cradle straps and raise lifts to full height, and clear scuppers and weep holes so hydrostatic pressure can relieve during surge.

Why do weep holes matter during storm surge?

Weep holes relieve hydrostatic pressure behind the wall as surge recedes. When they clog, the pressure differential across a panel during a rapid drawdown can exceed the panel's design load, which is why many walls fail after the storm passes rather than during it.

What documentation do insurers require?

Carriers generally require dated pre-loss photos showing condition, a contractor condition report, and evidence the damage is storm-related rather than progressive corrosion. Without pre-loss documentation, most marine structure claims are denied as wear and tear.

  • Photograph each panel joint and the full cap run, dated
  • Keep permits and prior repair invoices in one file
  • Record boat lift serial numbers and capacity plates

Should a boat be left on the lift during a hurricane?

No. Surge routinely exceeds lift travel height, and a boat floated off its cradle becomes a battering ram against the dock and seawall. Haul out or move to a designated hurricane hole, and leave the empty cradle raised to its highest position.
